Call for contributions

The ERCIM Working Group on Data and Information Spaces (DIS) is asking proposals for position papers for its second workshop, to be promoted under the theme of large scale and federated information spaces. The main goal of the workshop is to create a white paper presenting the current and future research trends concerning the wide scientific area the ERCIM-DIS workgroup members are involved. This white paper would be useful for the achievement of a common understanding within the workgroup members and the development of prosperous collaborations in the framework of the EU funding programs.

The objective of the ERCIM DIS WG is to build a strong network of researchers in the fields of data and information spaces. Of special importance is the development of methods and tools to make digital, cultural and scientific content available, searchable and accessible for all kinds of users. Also relevant will be the storage, preservation and curation of all types of data, including primary and scientific data. Other relevant issues will be scalability, intelligent information management and interoperability, which should be achieved on multiple levels (schema, repository as well system).

Therefore the main topics expected to be covered will be (but not limited to):

  • Infrastructures and services for DIS
  • Large scale DIS (corporations, research/e-Science, private/family, etc.)
  • Long-term preservation and curation in DIS
  • DIS and interoperability (data and metadata schemas, processes between systems, etc.)
  • DIS in specific contexts (such as geo-referenced/spatial, temporal, etc.)
  • Business processes and workflows in DIS (information life-cycle management, etc.)
  • Other issues in DIS, such as Open access, Open Archives, Federated repositories, etc.

Interested participants are invited to present their (organization's) plans and viewpoints for research in the DIS area for the next 5 years, documented by existing systems, services or technologies or innovative ideas for new projects or actions requiring the cooperation of other participants – experts on complementary domains.

The proposals, in the form of position papers (3 to 5 pages) should be submitted by email to the workshop co-chairs Christos Papatheodorou (papatheodor@ionio.gr) and Yannis Stavrakas (yannis@imis.athena-innovation.gr).

Depending of the capacity of the room, the participation in the workshop will be open to all the interested, even if the participant does not have submitted a proposal. The main workshop will be organized from 09:00 to 17:30. A social dinner, open to all the interested participants, may be arranged.

Organization

  • Christos Papatheodorou Ionian Univ. and Institute for the Management of Information Systems Athena RC, Greece
  • Ingeborg T. Sølvberg, NTNU, Norway (DIS coordinator)
  • Yannis Stavrakas, Institute for the Management of Information Systems, Athena RC, Greece

Important Dates

  • 27 April - Proposals due (extended from 22 April)
  • 30 April - Notification of acceptance
  • 20 May - Workshop

Invited Speaker

Professor Maristella Agosti, Department of Information Engineering, University of Padova, Italy will present: "The great research challenges for the Digital Library and the DIS communities in the next decade"

Venue

The Workshop will be held in conjunction with ERCIM Spring Days 2010, on Thursday 20 May 2010 at CWI in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Information about the whole event is as well as the registration form and a link to CWI hotel booking partner are available at http://www.cwi.nl/ercim2010.

At the start of the workshop (09.00 - 09.30 a.m.) there will be coffee for the people coming in directly (either from the airport or from self selected hotels), and a bus between the meeting hotels and CWI.

During the day two coffee breaks as well as a standing lunch with sandwiches are planned.

After the workshop a dinner has been arranged for the participants at the Science Park café-restaurant (located 5 minutes walking distance from CWI, on the other side of the campus road, www.cafe-restaurantpolder.nl for further reference and the English menu).

At the end of this dinner at a fixed time a bus will bring participants to the meeting hotels. Please register at your earliest convenience but no later than *April 2nd, 2010* to facilitate the organization of this event. Please reserve your stay at one of the two meeting hotels available, if possible, before *March 16th, 2010*.

In case you want to stay at another hotel or you are booking you stay after the expiry date of the block booking, you will have to find and book a room yourself. Probably rooms will be available in the city, maybe even still some in the offered hotels. In case you are staying elsewhere than the Mercure Amstel or Novotel City, unfortunately you can't use the transportation arrangements. Buses will pass only between the above mentioned hotels, CWI and the restaurant.
